Run, run, run as fast as you can: Shrek Jr. begins its run at Westminster Christian Academy on Friday, November 14th! It will run for two nights, and the cast will perform a Friday matinee for local Christian school students. The cast includes Josiah Butz (freshman) as Shrek, Emily Roberts (freshman) as Fiona, Tristan Williams (7th grade) as Donkey, and James Havens (freshman) as Lord Farquad. Allen Schwamb is directing.
Based on the classic 2001 movie, the musical first premiered in 2008 at The Broadway Theatre in New York City. Shrek tells the story of the world’s beloved ogre, Shrek, as he learns the meaning of friendship and belonging. The musical is packed with killer jokes, catchy songs, and iconic lines that audiences will be quick to recognize. However, the musical is so much more than silly one-liners. It has layers and lessons that will be heartwarming for the audiences to experience.
Josiah Butz, freshman, has had a blast bringing this iconic character to life. While he has enjoyed the humorous aspects of the process, such as “learning the classic Scottish accent,” there have been many genuine learning experiences for him as well. “I’ve learned how to stick with something, no matter how embarrassing it is,” Butz says.
Although Shrek is known for its satirical storyline and punny script, there is a lot more to it than people may realize. The production emphasises the importance of being true to yourself and letting your “freak flag fly,” no matter how other people may think of you. According to Josiah, Shrek learns how to “be himself” and surround himself with others who truly love him. By attending this production, audience members have the opportunity to learn the same.
This iconic tale is something that Westminster students do not want to miss. The entire cast’s passion and hard work brings so much light to the stage, and will make for an unforgettable performance. Be sure to snatch tickets for this “big, bright, beautiful” show!
