The movie WALL-E portrays a future generation of immobilized humans living depressing virtual lives. Watching WALL-E as a child was a very critical moment for me. It was the first time a film had invoked apprehension in me, and tears. I had so much fear for my future, for what the world was going to become before I could see it. Not only was my fear of the future driving me to tears, it was the little robot WALL-E. He painted a picture of what it is like being so utterly alone, and different.
Many people can relate to that little robot because he illustrates how many of us feel today, alone without someone to relate with. As we had high hopes to defeat the warnings and daunting problems we may have encountered in future evolution of tech and the industries, we find ourselves already with the alarming idea that we are already too far gone.
Now here in 2025, hopelessly shackled to our devices and possibly using AI for basic questions. From the genesis of the internet in the late 1980s, the use of the internet has become ever-present. As a culture we tend to want more of something, and as a society we don’t care whether it is of good quality or not. Being consumers of content in this way has had a huge impact on our society’s overall critical thinking skills with content and social media. We want to have the answers to everything, but we don’t want to use our own brains to understand the questions.
The internet has expedited everyday activities making life much less boring, but simultaneously making chores and real life dull. This lack of boredom can also be caused by an addiction to constant flow of content that is being fed to the public. Britannica states that, “The vast wealth of information available at one’s fingertips can have a negative impact on people’s well-being. Several people close to me have developed an addiction, or near addiction, to internet content.
They prefer to interact with others via electronic means rather than face to face. They have a fear of missing out on the latest news or happenings in the world, so they are constantly updating news feeds, blogs, etc. One person has exhibited classic signs of withdrawal when forced to abandon internet access for more than an hour.” During free time or downtime for most people it has become a constant habit to go on their phone at every free moment. Without boredom and un-stimulating moments in our day-to-day lives we lose the substance and genuineness that life and seemingly “dull” tasks have to offer. We feared these days were coming almost decades ago.
In the future of technology there is potential for positive controls to be put on all we are to have available to us. Phyciastrics online unearths the possibilities for technology while still being wary of its potential harm to humans in the future. The Atlantic International University has high hopes for the wise use of technology in the future. “Looking ahead, the future of technology holds exciting possibilities.
Emerging fields such as quantum computing, nanotechnology, and space exploration have the potential to unlock new frontiers of knowledge and capability. However, it is essential to balance innovation with ethical considerations and ensure that technological advancements benefit all of humanity.” As we continue to develop how we use technology in our daily lives, the reminder to not use technology as a crutch for life still remains.
In an article by Concordia University dealing with the use of technology they say this: “Though the Internet has become a requirement for many aspects of our lives, there are still many occasions when unplugging is possible — and preferable — to being tethered to a device. With continuing innovation and technology changes, it will become more difficult to strike a balance between “real” life and online life. But as more is learned about our tendency to become attached to technology, strategies and even treatments will emerge to help mitigate the negative behaviors associated with it.”
As a society we can try and create distractions or create stepping stones that help us go through our daily lives, but that will only leave us feeling overwhelmed and unprepared when given a task when you are prohibited from using a resource or help. Developing skills to problem solve and go through life without a crutch of AI or a search engine that will help you get through a daily task “easier”.
