To Do It Better

Faculty share thoiughts on JD

Aside from students, JD Wiese touched the lives of many faculty at WCA. Teachers wrote paragraphs on the mark JD had left on them; however, due to the amount of space, here are small pieces of the kind words for JD

JD was an avid learner especially in the realm of literature class. “Not only that, JD was incredibly thoughtful. Knowing how much I love colored pens, JD got me a big pack of my favorite kind that now serve as a happy reminder of a student that changed my life through the way he lived his,” said Molly Arvesen, literature teacher.

Chemistry was another subject JD excelled at, “Some students are strong with the math in chemistry, some students naturally grasp how to work in the lab, some are able to apply mental models and understand abstract concepts. JD did not fit any of the usual categories. At least in chemistry, ordinary concepts did not come easily to JD, but the extraordinary (philosophical) did,” said Dr. Andrew Shaw, honors chemistry teacher.

JD had a craving to learn and he took that focus into Chris Knerr, history teacher’s classroom on a daily basis: “Instead of saying, ‘Why did you take points off here?’, JD would say, ‘How can I do this better?’  At JD’s memorial, when I heard about the testimony of his parents, I truly came to understand the reality of the Gospel: Jesus died.  Jesus rose. Jesus lives,” said Knerr.

JD prospered n the mathmatical field in Margaret Moore’s class. “The memories I have include him eating cliff bars before class, him laughing with his classmates about Cornell, talking about Tennis after school, him doing math problems on the board with Davis H.  I also remember him telling me after he got me M&M’s for Christmas that he wasn’t sure if I liked M&M’s and was going to pay very close attention all spring semester to see if he could pick up on what I liked most without me noticing,” said Moore, AP calc teacher.

Speaking Spanish was another skill that JD enjoyed discovering. “Often, he will come to my room before school or whenever he had an opportunity to make sure he was doing his assignments the way he supposed to, and/or ask for help if he needed it. JD gave his 100% in every class he took with me. He always showed interest on learning Spanish,” said Gina Meeks, spanish teacher.

Buisness was a topic JD was fascinated with because someday he had the chance to help run his family’s buisness, Wiese U.S.A. “The thing I remember most about JD was his ability to consistently be intrigued by the most detailed topics in business. From multi-sided platforms to gross profit margins, JD always had a question of depth,”said Jonathan Horn, marketing teacher.
