Against All Odds

Everybody is always looking at the star quarterback or the point guard who just made the last-minute shot to win the game, but few people think about the person in the background, the one who perseveres through their own challenges and far surpasses expectations.

One of these people is Andrew Eichelberger, a freshman here at Westminster.

Andrew was born and lived his early infancy in St. Petersberg, Russia. The Eichelberger family adopted him at ten months of age. Soon after he came to the U.S., he developed stiffness in his right side and failed use his right hand the way he should.

About a month later, Andrew was diagnosed with a rare disorder of the central nervous system called schizencephaly. In many cases, this rare disorder causes blindness and inability to walk, talk or live a normal life. In Andrew’s case, it causes pervasive paralysis of his right arm and severe impairment of his speech.

Despite the adversities that he faces, Andrew refuses to be limited by his disabilities. He is very active and participates in several extra-curricular activities at Westminster.

Andrew has a passion for football and has played for the Wildcats since seventh grade.

“I don’t play football because people want or expect me to, I play because it’s fun,” said Eichelberger.

Other members of the team appreciate Andrew’s diligence and dedication.

“Andrew has to work really hard during practices and games to make up for his disability, but he never gives up,” said Nick Bell, freshman.

Even more counterintuitive is Andrew’s involvement in the performing arts. Andrew took drama class last semester, and he performed at the end of the semester in Art a la Carte.

“On the stage, Andrew’s disabilities are evident, but he doesn’t let it stop him. When the class had to memorize and recite a Shakespeare quote, he stood up on the stage and did it with everybody else. I appreciated how hard he works in my class,” said Jim Butz, drama teacher.

Andrew’s family has been critical in helping him to overcome the challenges he faces.

“I’m grateful for my sister, father and mother and all the support they’ve given me over the years,” said Andrew.

Andrew’s mother shared her respect for her son.

“Andrew has been such a trooper. From the age of 10 months he has attended speech therapy and occupational therapies.  He always gives his best effort and he works hard each and every day. When you watch Andrew at a football game, he is having a great time even when he isn’t playing. When the coach gives the call for him to play, he hustles to his position and he plays with his whole heart. His effort and passion make us so proud and blessed to be his parents,” said Kathy Eichelberger.

Andrew’s perseverance and positive attitude on life despite seemingly overwhelming disadvantages serve as an example that talent and perseverance thrive in our school,  both in the shadows and the spotlight.
