Crunching Numbers on Thursdays

A pencil, a piece of paper, and an open mind are all that one needs to journey into the vast world of numbers. WCA students who were interested in brushing up on their calculations have been welcome to attend the Math Club since 2007, but now, the club doesn’t exist anymore. It has grown into something a little different, and possibly, more productive.

In the daily announcements, the Math Club is still mentioned but the entry is not completely accurate. Yes, they meet on Thursdays, but it is not really a club, per say, any more. Now, the Math Club is a peer tutoring program for anyone who is interested.

“Lina Jin, junior, organized some of her Korean friends to meet Thursdays after school for an hour to get together to do homework. I really like that component to come and receive help or come and give help,” said Jacob Mohler, Upper School math teacher.

This concept of peer tutoring is very helpful for students who seriously need help in their math classes. Many pay quite a bit of money to get this service from a professional tutoring company, but with the new math club, students will be able to get direct help from classmates.

“I’m hoping that people frequent the Math Club to get math help for free instead of paying for tutors,” said Mohler.

However, many people do not know why the Math Club just recently ended. The new program is just as good, but the reason for the end to the Math Club is not very clear.

“Numbers have never been high, and since robotics came in, most kids joined that and the Chess Club,” said Mohler.

Any student is free to share their understanding of math with others, and everyone is invited to further their own knowledge. This could potentially change the way students view math as just another boring school subject

“It would be nice if the perception of what math is could be different,” said Mohler.
