Hockey Attendence Skyrockets

Over the past season, Westminster students have been enthralled with the game of hockey. Westminster boasts one of the best teams in their conference, and over the last few years, have placed in the top five of the conference seats.

But this season, the fans have been out full force and the Blue Crew in particular has been front and center for support.

“At the beginning of last season hockey wasn’t even on people’s minds, and now its cool to walk down the halls and see people talking about it, and congratulating you,” said Zachary Bross, junior triple A hockey player.

Besides the Blue Crew this season has also brought many first timers to the game of hockey, and with it new enthusiasm for the sport.

“I like hockey games because its s fun show up and be crazy with my friends. Also its a contact sport which makes it exciting and you can always sit close to the action, kind of like being on the ice,” said Caleb Hicks, junior.

Hicks also said he loves the game because scoring a single point can change the game at any moment.

Hockey has been around at Westminster for a while, but its popularity this year has been surprising. Bross contributes the fast pace of the game to its very popular status, but many more say that hockey’s winning records over the last few years has really helped it get off the ground.

“We have a lot of older students, like Ryan Cognahan, Will Campell, and Brendan Terbrock, as well as younger one who play great,” said Bross.

Last season the Hockey team finished 17-3-1, and none other than CBC, WCA’s biggest rival in hockey, stopped its momentum.

The hockey players have taken notice of the new attention and are excited to bring the best game they have.

“ We like putting on a really good show for the fans,” said Bross.

This season has been very successful with a current 15-2-1 record.

Most would also agree that the amount people have given the sport a new more energetic feel.

“I really enjoy it, and the more people really make it more fun, and excitement,” said Hicks.

As of now Hockey has become the new elite sport that is taking hold of WCA, with its good show and great atmosphere. And as the season continues, and hockey continues its winning status, we can be sure that the sport will continue to have its attendance skyrocket to the top.
