A Fabulous Fall for Westminster Varsity Sports

Congratulations to Wildcats on an exciting and memorable fall for every Westminster team.  From unprecedented winning streaks to state championships, WCA varsity boys and girls teams stun fans with their success.Westminster’s varsity football had a fantastic season.  The team finished a 8-3 season with four of its players being chosen for the All-District Team of the 2012 season in Class 4, District 3.  These players were Jesse Gruneisen, Coby Nye, seniors, and Brett Bond, Kyle Kinner, juniors.

The men’s varsity soccer team advanced through the season to the semi-final district match after a 13-10 season.  Unfortunately, wildcat soccer players fell to defeat against the Parkway West Longhorns, but the team still had a successful and exciting season.

Westminster girl’s varsity tennis faced an unexpected turn for the worse in the district meet.  Westminster’s doubles teams (Schlafly/Bergman & Ottsen/Deves, juniors) made their way to the semi-finals where they lost to Visitation Academy.  Esther McGowan, junior, played a close game with an opponent from Visitation but was unable to pull out a victory.  These lady wildcats finished the season with 8 wins and 4 losses, proving to be a squad full of talent.

WCA varsity softball also competed strongly this fall with a 8-10 record to show for it.  The team also won their last regular game 11-1 against Lutheran North.

Varsity Cross Country had a fabulous season as well.  Laura Tarantino, senior, finished first place in the district meet.  The girls’ varsity team earned fourth place overall in districts and the boys varsity team came in sixth place, both in a very tough Class 3 district.  Tarantino along with fellow senior Reagen Dykehouse, who got fourth in the district meet, made it to the state meet in Jefferson City and competed respectfully.

The Varsity boys’ swim team also competed strongly in their state meet.  The boys’ swim team had finished 32nd at state with and impeccable score of 14.5 points.  Easton Noble, senior, competed magnificently with All State, fifth place, in the 100 Breaststroke and Honorable Mention, 16th place, in the 50 Free.  Three school records were broken at the state swim meet, helping the team move up from 32nd to 21st place.

All WCA fall sports team competed well this season but it is the girl’s varsity volleyball and golf teams that took home state championships.

The Westminster women’s golf team made it to the state meet after becoming district champions for the third year in a row.  This powerhouse team had an undefeated season, not losing a single match.  WCA’s golf team has not lost a meet in two years.

Although this year’s State meet was a tough competition, lady wildcats pulled out back to back 1st place titles for Team Champions and Brooke Cusumano, senior, as an Individual Champion.

Female varsity volleyball players also made it to the state competition this year.  Never having won a state championship before, this team was determined to find a way to make it onto the podium.  They finished their 29-6-2 season with a win against Pleasant Hill in the final game of the state tournament.

It has been a miraculous fall season for sports at WCA!  Wildcat fans are hoping the winter season will be just a successful.
