Wildcats Defeat Duchesne Pioneers

The WCA football team completed an impressive 7-2 regular season with a hard-fought 20-15 victory on Friday, October 19th, over the Duchesne Pioneers in St. Charles. Wide receiver and cornerback Coby Nye, senior, led the team by scoring two touchdowns in the first half, one on a 22 yard interception return and the other on 70 yard screen pass from quarterback Brett Bond, junior.

“Coby played exceptionally when we needed him to. He made big plays when we needed them to be made, and carried the team on his back,” said Jesse Gruneisen, senior team captain and starting linebacker.

The Pioneers answered with a 25 yard run by their quarterback Clay Stulce, junior, just before halftime. However, the Wildcats held firm and struck back towards the end of the third quarter with a 23 yard touchdown pass over the middle from Bond to slotback Jacob Hicks.

The Pioneers attempted a comeback late in the game when Stulce hit his wideout Drew Moore, junior for a 24 yard touchdown with 1:45 left in the fourth quarter. Duchesne then made the two point conversion, but the Wildcats recovered the onside kick and proceeded to run ou the clock to seal the victory.

The Wildcats’ defense played superbly, holding Duchesne to a mere 282 yards on offense and to 15 points.

“Except for a few mental mistakes we played well and bottled up their run game,” said Gruneisen.

Westminster is the fourth seed in its’ district bracket and will play Ladue, who holds the fifth seed, at Parkway West in the opening round of the playoffs.

“I am confident that we can beat Ladue if we have a focused week of practice and bring it during the game,” said Gruneisen.
