State Bound Swimming

Still going strong, the Westminster lady swimmers headed to state on Friday at the St. Peters Rec-Plex in hopes of taking high places and setting records.
Ellie Straub, sophomore, Haley Bergman, senior, Rebecca Krause, junior, and Leah Votava, freshman, represented the Wildcats.
“I was looking forward to being with the team at state because it is a great group of girls. It was so exciting because we qualified for state in the last meet before districts, which was pretty much our last chance to make the cut,” said Straub.
Straub, Bergman, Krause, and Votava participated in the 200 Medley Relay. Also, Haley Bergman competed in the100 Breaststroke
“I thought the girls would have a tough time qualifying in the relay. I knew Haley would make breast, but I didn’t think they would be lucky enough to make top 16 at state,” said Kent Kehr, swimming coach.
Swimming is different than most sports because there are not different divisions of classes. Everyone who has made the qualifying times shows up at one big meet to compete, making it extremely hard to qualify.
“We were really excited to make state, but it was a bummer we had school off Friday anyway and didn’t get to miss school for such an exciting event,” said Krause.
The top 16 winners in each event continued on to the finals on Saturday.
“We have high hopes for next year if we can find someone to step up and take Haley’s place after graduating in the Breaststroke leg,” said Straub.
The girls were all sick at state so they did not accomplish the times at state that they were hoping for, but they still enjoyed the experience.
