Softball Topples Rosati-Kain in First Win of Season

The Wildcats secured a victory to start season 1-1 as they crushed Rosati-Kain 16-6.

To open the scoring, Annie Backs, senior, hit an RBI groundout scoring Izzi Clawson, sophomore, in the second AB of the game. The Wildcats further advanced runners to second and third, but squandered the opportunity.

After a scoreless inning for the opposition, Erin King, sophomore, hit an RBI double that scored Brooke Lemp, junior, in the second inning. King advanced to third on a passed ball. In the same at bat, Clawson, the lead off hitter, advanced to second on a walk with superb hussel. Both runners scored on Backs’ second and third RBIs of the game. The fourth run of the inning came when Backs scored on a groundout via the bat of Megan Wibbenmeyer, senior.

In the third inning, Maddie Volding, sophomore, and King scored off of back to back errors made on quality bunts and stellar base running.

Rosati-Kain recorded their first hit in the third, and manufactured a run on a bunt and a wild pitch. A single, two more passed balls, and an error by the shortstop scored the second run of the inning. A clutch strikeout got the lady cats out of the jam.

After another scoreless frame, Backs notched yet another hit to leadoff the inning, advancing to second on a groundout, third on a passed ball, and scored on Senior Taylor Dorsey’s RBI triple, making it an 8-2 ballgame. Volding walked and stole third to put runners at second and third, and Lemp beat out a bunt single and scored the Cat’s ninth run. King walked to load the bases, and another passed ball made it 10-2. With runners at second and third, back to back walks brought in another run. With the bases loaded,Backs cleared the bases with a double. She came home on Senior Keely Sweet’s RBI double. Wibbenmeyer pinch ran and scored on Dorsey’s single. A groundout put a stop to the bleeding as the cats managed to push across nine runs.

After back to back two out singles, Rosati-Kain mustered an infield hit, scoring their third run, but the Cats quickly ended the inning.

After the Wildcats failed to register a run in the final inning for the first time all game, Rosati came up swinging with a leading single and RBI double. That runner scored on a drop third strike passed ball, making it 16-5. Another RBI double brought home the third run of the inning, and that runner scored on an RBI groundout. A walk and a base hit put two runners aboard, but pitcher Sweet got a strikeout and a groundout to end the game for her first complete game of the season.
