Distracting Diversions

Distraction is a harmful element that inhibits the current work of high school students in America today. More and more children are being distracted by activities involving technology that are obviously more appealing than boring assignments that could benefit their futures.

America is an extremely entertainment and pleasure-driven nation, and it is tempting turn from a boring, educational activity to hobbies or leisure that satisfy urges for fun. Companies such as Apple and Microsoft put out thousands of new gadgets every year. There is an attraction for everyone to buy these new toys in order to progress their future. With new apps, cameras, and internet access on phones, textbooks are becoming less appealing.

Teachers often assign backpacks full of homework that require hours each night of contemplation. However, few students actually complete the entire assignment and have to finish it either before class starts the next morning or in a very strategically placed study hall.

This new generation has been noted for its lack of conviction and limited vocabulary. Although Westminster students are extremely blessed with a fabulous education, many fail to notice the benefits and consequently do not work as hard as they can.

With the new ways of watching favorite shows such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu, the attraction for students coming home from a long day is to watch something before starting on homework. This results in homework becoming more confusing and taking longer to do.

High school students must understand that in American culture it is hard to tear oneself away from enjoyable distractions such as iPhones, iPads and tablets, and TV. It is fun to have all the benefits of a first world country such as the United States, but teenagers can not let this get in the way of what they want to do with their lives. Students must acquire more drive in order to achieve what they want out of life, or they will let American education go to waste.
