Westminster announces new Athletic Director for the 2011-2012 school year.

Todd Zell has been selected to serve as Westminster Christian Academy’s athletic director for the 2011-2012 school year.

Before accepting his position at WCA, Zell served as Athletic Director at Rockwood Summit for 4 years.  Prior to his service as athletic director, Zell worked for 11 years as a math teacher, head boy’s basketball coach, varsity assistant softball coach (state champions in 2006) and junior varsity baseball coach. Zell’s past experiences have prepared him for his new position at WCA.

“Having been at one place for 15 years, I look forward to a new challenge and to helping show St. Louis and the state what an outstanding Christian school looks like.  I also look forward to making some great relationships with the staff and most importantly with the students,” said Zell.

Zell feels that WCA has a strong sports program that does not need too much change, but there are a few adjustments he would like to make.

“I will always look for ways to find kids opportunities to get involved.  A couple of the things that I started here at Summit I would like to bring over.  One is a captain’s council where I get to meet with student athlete leaders once a month to discuss their roles as leaders of their programs and the school.  The other is we do our team photos on a Saturday, and I also have a meeting with parents, athletes, and coaches to discuss expectations,” said Zell.

As he takes the reigns of the athletic program at Westminster, Zell plans to combine the strength of WCA’s tradition with some new ideas for the 2011 school year.

“WCA has a fantastic reputation in the St. Louis community as far as athletics go. I hope we continue to do that and always strive for continuous improvement,” said Zell.

While Westminster is enthusiastic to welcome Zell to the academy, this bittersweet exchange comes with the retirement of the current Athletic Director Alan Miller.

During his time at WCA, Miller has made many contributions to the athletic program, consistently going beyond the call of duty to develop a community around sports activities.

“In my opinion the top aspect of his role as AD has been his ability to build and maintain strong relationships in our community.  He works very closely with the coaches and has built a lot of trust among the coaching staff,” said JD Perona, middle school athletic director.

In addition to his work to bring the Westminster community together, Miller has played a huge part of getting the athletic program to where it is today.

“I think his calming presence and good business tactics were the key to getting us into the new league, and our transition to the new campus,” said Laura Copeland, Athletic Administrative Assistant.

Miller’s years of hard work and determination in the name of WCA has left the school a better place, and ministered to the lives of many students, past and present.

“The athletes in our school know how hard he has worked to make our program one of the best in the area and he has helped grow the school spirit and game attendances to a high level,” said Perona.

Beyond the basic duties of Athletic Director, Miller has served the community of WCA by building relationships with parents, staff, and students. Westminster Christian Academy will be sad to see Alan Miller go, but will welcome newcomer Todd Zell with open arms.Director Alan Miller.
