UMSL Presents Younkin with Science Award

On March 2, Gordon Younkin, junior, recieved the Distinguished Achievement Award for Excellence in Science. The University of Missouri-St. Louis presented the award to Younkin and other St. Louis high school students at a banquet held at the university.
Younkin was nominated by Dr. Andrew Shaw, upper school science teacher.
“He was taking our top AP science classes and he was demonstrating an excellence in those sciences. He was also an extremely conscientious and carful student,” said Shaw.
There were 36 students at the banquet along with their parents. Along with dinner, the families were able to hear a performance from the Dickson String Quartet. Among others, the Chancellor of UMSL spoke to these distinguished students.
Younkin’s interest in science has grown during his time at Westminster.
“I am taking two science classes this year and…I enjoyed the science classes at Westminster and I do well in them,” said Younkin.
He is currently enrolled in AP Biology and AP Chemistry.
“My parents encouraged me to get into science and encouraged me to take the two science classes this year,” said Younkin.
Younkin, though not certain, is thinking of pursuing studies in the sciences in the future.
“I am thinking about majoring in biology. Biology is my favorite part of science because I like learning about living things and not just chemicals,” said Younkin.
