There are several different student-run clubs at Westminster that cover a variety of different areas of interest within the student body, however, this year, junior Ginger Cox and senior Charlie Mathis have founded a club the likes of which Westminster has never seen. As the leaders of the Pro-life club, they have pioneered a new kind of club altogether, a club focused on addressing one of the most controversial political topics of our time: the abortion debate.
Ginger Cox, the vice president and co-founder of the pro-life club, revealed that the club was created to educate Westminster’s student body on how to defend a pro-life stance on the abortion debate in the secular world:
”I think it [abortion] is a very prominent issue nowadays, and I feel like a lot of Westminster students say they are pro-life, but they could not defend it outside of Westminster with any scientific facts or anything on the legislative side of it.”
The pro-life club’s goal in the Westminster community is not necessarily to spread the pro-life agenda, but to equip those who are passionate about the cause with the scientific context they need to defend their beliefs.
As Charlie Mathis, the president and other co-founder of the club further elaborated:
“It is important to be able to defend it by our faith, but many people when it comes to politics, don’t believe you when you defend your view on abortion in a Biblical sense. […] It’s important to be able to defend something politically without quoting a Bible verse.”
While giving students substantial scientific evidence to support their beliefs is certainly a much-needed contribution to the Westminster community, the leaders of the pro-life club are even going a step further in their efforts to make an impact in the world around them.
In addition to their work equipping Westminster’s student body with the knowledge needed to present an intellectually compelling argument against abortion, Ginger also explained that the club plans to engage the community outside of Westminster as well:
”So we’re going through a program called Students for life USA. I’m still in the process of applying with them because it’s a long process, but they will notify us when there are rallies and events or just areas where we can help out.”
Although their application is still pending, Students for Life of America is one of the biggest pro-life organizations in the USA, and would allow the club to attend rallies for the pro-life movement, and would inform them of various ongoing fundraisers that they could promote in the Westminster community.
Jim Butz, Westminster’s coordinator of theatrical events and the pro-life club’s sponsor, perfectly summarizes the goals and purpose of the club:
“My hope for this club is that it would not be known for what it’s against, but what it’s for. It’s pro-women, it’s pro-child, it’s pro-birth, it’s pro-life. We’re not just out there protesting things, but to provide diapers, money, assistance, fundraising, goods and services that are much needed by these non for profit organizations that are coming alongside women.”
