In 2003, Teen magazine reported that 35 per cent of girls 6 to 12 years of age have been on at least one diet, and that 50 to 70 per cent of normal weight girls believe they are overweight. Overall, research indicates that 90% of women are dissatisfied with their appearance in some way.
This semester, Anne Westhoff, Girls Physical Education coach, and Carla Meyer, 1999 Westminster graduate and the Director of Guidance and Counseling’s, Kathy Karigan’s, intern, embarked on a heartfelt endeavor to discuss these widespread self-image issues in women’s physical education classes.
Westhoff and Meyer teamed up because the duo firmly believes in addressing the pressures that modern media places upon young and teenage girls. Also, the seminar asserted that pressure closes in on girls from all sides: parents, friends, and most obviously, themselves.
“It was a perfect fit to do this in PE, especially Lifetime Fitness, because this issue deals with your entire life, not just this time,” said Meyer.
As a woman who loves to porous the latest magazine, Meyer understands that the pressures are apparent, but she also wanted to explore the classes feeling about these expectations.
“I feel so awkward right now, but it is nice to know everyone does,” said an anonymous PE student.
During these seminars, Meyer engaged in conversation with the girls and shared about her own personal struggles with body image. Also, Meyer revealed the reality of retouching in the media by showing the insider website stilettorevolt.com.
Westhoff wholeheartedly aggresses with dedicating time to this issue.
“I wish we could get something in the curriculum that dealt with these issues for both females and males. Classes that we could break down health and wellness to not just physical, but mental and spiritual,” said Westhoff.
Over, all involved parties believed the classes were a success and hope to continue them next semester. The aspiration for Westhoff and Meyer lies in aiding in young females understanding who they are and whose they are.
“Being physically healthy does not just mean with your body, but also your mind and heart. Having healthy self-perception and knowing who you are in Christ relates directly to holistic view of health and wellness,” said Westhoff.
As one wise PE student remarked, “WCA has so many beautiful girls – cover girls in Christ.”
