Coach Legters paced the sideline, focused entirely on the game at hand. The Wildcats were facing Priory, a tough opponent, and every move on the field counted. He didn’t know it yet, but tonight had the potential to be historic. From the first whistle, the Wildcats pressed forward, determined to strike early. It didn’t take long for Ben Wooldridge to make a difference.
In the 15th minute, he sprinted down the left flank, his eyes scanning for options. Ben Wooldridge darted through the center, and Austin delivered a perfect assist. Ben took one clean touch and slotted the ball into the net, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats carried that momentum into halftime. But as the second half began, Priory came out with renewed intensity. Just ten minutes in, they broke through the Wildcats’ defense and found the equalizer, making it 1-1. Coach Legters kept his cool, urging his team to stay composed. With time ticking down, the Wildcats needed someone to step up. Once again, Ben Wooldridge took matters into his own hands. Standing just outside the 18-yard box, he struck a blistering shot that snuck into the bottom left corner of the net. 2-1 Wildcats. The bench erupted, and Ben was flooded by his teammates. “It is an amazing feeling having the support and encouragement of my teammates, it is something I never experienced playing for city” said senior Ben Wooldridge.
The Wildcats weren’t finished, though. Krew Collison appeared to have scored a third goal when his shot crossed the line, but the referee missed it, waving play on. Minutes later, Landon Ingram found the back of the net, only for the goal to be disallowed after a miscommunication between the referees. Frustration bubbled up, but Coach Legters kept his focus on the clock. When the final whistle blew, the Wildcats had held on to their 2-1 lead. The team celebrated wildly, but for Coach Legters, it was just another hard-fought victory. He gathered his players in the huddle to congratulate them on the win, unaware of what was about to be revealed. As the team began to disperse, his wife came out with a sign celebrating him with his 300th win.
“It’s rewarding because we have had too good teams to help propel the program to get where we are now. Starting coaching in 1997 for jv and 2001 with varsity.” Said Coach Dan Legters. Coach Legters was in shock and had no idea that this was so monumental for him. The realization hit him, and his face broke into a smile. The team, overhearing the news, rushed back to mob him in celebration. Coach Legters stood in the middle of the chaos, soaking in the moment. He hadn’t expected it, but this 300th win would go down as one of the sweetest of his career.
