Ellie Johnson places third at her final state golf tournament.

Due to yet another fantastic season of golf and a third place finish at the Class 2 state tournament, Ellie Johnson, senior, is this week’s “Athlete of the Week.”

Johnson has played on the varsity golf team for four years and has been the #1 position each year, as well as receiving 1st Team All-Conference, All-District, All-Metro, 1st Team All-State, and Academic All-State honors.

Not surprisingly, Ellie collected her second consecutive district title, easily surpassing her competitors with a 78. This achievement led her to be selected as the “KTRS Schnucks Athlete of the Week” on October 14th, where she was interviewed on the station about her performance.

Johnson has qualified for the state tournament every season, placing 21st, 20th, fifth, and now third. In the past two days, on October 18th and 19th, she scored an 80 and a 77, ending with a total of 157.

“My overall performance was a little worse than I’ve been playing during the season, but the course was much much tougher than what we play in matches, so it’s okay,” said Johnson.

Although she has received numerous opportunities to play division one collegiate golf, Johnson prioritizes her academics over athletics.

“I’m not planning on playing in college. I’ve had tons of offers but it’s too much of a commitment. I might walk onto the WashU team if I end up going there, but either way I’ll definitely play for fun,” said Johnson.
