Lucy Knerr, sophomore, wins the “pig of the game” for lacrosse for scoring the first goal of the season last spring.

Going into a game against the 17th ranked team in the Midwest, filled with college commits, including Harvard and the University of New Hampshire, as a sophomore on varsity, would be daunting for anybody. However, this week’s Athlete of the Week, Lucy Knerr, was not going to back down from a challenge.

Knerr was asked to play goalie for the varsity team after their second game of the season. Until then, Katie Huang, senior, was filling the role, despite her preference for the midfield.

“Going into the game, all I was thinking was how I need to do my job and do it well and just play like I play in practice,” said Knerr.

This mindset greatly paid off, as Knerr made a whopping 18 saves in the game (on Thursday, September 23rd) to hold the Rams to only four goals compared to Westminster’s one, scored by Mia Scheulen, sophomore.

“I know there would be a couple goals, that was inevitable, but I knew that I needed to shake them off and stay focused,” said Knerr.

Not only is Knerr a valuable player on the field hockey team, but she is also one of the stars of the lacrosse team, as she played midfield for varsity her freshman year.
