The Story That Will Steal Your Heart

Six of Crows Review

I do not know if I have ever enjoyed a book as much as I enjoyed Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. And I read a lot.

Six of Crows is not like other stories in its genre. Typically in Young Adult Fiction novels, the main focus of the book is the relationships, while the plot is kind of set to the side in hopes that the readers will be caught up in the character’s emotions. This was not the case in Six of Crows. Even though the relationships were still important, the heist was the central focus of the novel.

The heist was intelligent and thought out. Bardugo did not hold anything back. Like any good heist story, there is somewhere to break into and something to steal (in this case, a high-security prison called the Ice Court and a scientist with a formula for a magical drug that could end the world). Six of Crows has everything you might expect from an exciting robbery story––a state-of-the-art plan, misdirection, and complications––and it was all magnificently woven in a way where the plot twists were not expected, by neither the readers nor the crew of characters.

The six young criminals were extremely fun to read about, mainly because they did not get along right away. None of the characters had the same motivations for joining the crew, which created complications right off the bat. Whether it was the hatred and guilt between Matthias (an imprisoned soldier trying to get home) and Nina (a fiery girl with dangerous powers), or Kaz’s twisted, hidden intentions as the gang’s leader, the interactions between characters as they traveled and performed the heist were always engaging.

Six of Crows made my jaw drop at the plot twists, eyes burn as I read for hours on end, and heart pound as I fell in love with every single page. If you are looking for a book that will take you on a thrilling rollercoaster ride of emotions, Six of Crows is the perfect novel for you.
