Ultimate Time

The Ultimate Frisbee club, was started 5 years ago by a few students and Abby Karsten, upper school math teacher. In the beginning, the club consisted of about 5 people who all went to a park close to the old campus to perfect their game. At first, the members would randomly throw around the frisbee with no idea with what exactly they were doing, but over the years much has changed.

As of now, the club has expanded into a team of about 10 people, they now have a team that has an offensive and a defensive plan, and they have subs to spare when they play against opposing teams and schools.

But making the change from a small group of people to a bigger more competitive group wasn’t easy. There had to be a lot of in-school recruiting, looking for a league, and getting experience by playing other schools. There were a lot of hurdles for the Ultimate Frisbee Team, as they searched for play against other schools and to become an official club team sport.

“There has been a High School Ultimate league for almost ten years. They always played games on Sundays which wasn’t an option for us. I’ve kept up with the organizer for several years and this year, he agreed to schedule our games on Saturdays. After that, I had to register our team in the national organization and get students to commit their time and money,” said Evan Munger, upper school physics teacher and Ultimate Frisbee coach.

While it may have proved bothersome, the results have payed off for Munger and the team.

“I really like being around students outside and teaching something that I love. I don’t think there is anything better in life than challenging students with something that seems insurmountable and then seeing them succeed at it,” said Munger.

Second-year member Steven Howell, junior, had this to say about playing the newly found club sport:

“I really like Ultimate Frisbee and learning all of the stuff that  go along with it.” said Howell.

The How To For Ultimate Frisbee:

1. Only seven people on the field at a time.

2. There are 2 halves in a match. When one team gets to 7 points, then it is halftime.

3. Cannot move with the frisbee. Players have to pass the frisbee to teammates, and if the frisbee touches the ground, it is a turnover.

4. First team to 14 wins.

5. There are no referees, so fouls are called by players.
