Spring Sports 2014

MENS GOLF

The men’s golf team began the year by defeating Class 4 heavy-weight Chaminade at Westborough Country Club by two strokes, 244-246.  J.D. Klein, senior lead the team by firing a two over par, 36 and Nick George, senior and Jordan Merkel, freshmen were close behind to card 39’s.  Other Wildcats were not far behind putting up solid scores in the low 40’s.  The team played in the annual SLUH Invitational Tournament at the Missouri Bluffs Golf Club.  In a field of stacked competition facing the area’s biggest and strongest schools, the Cats held their own.  The golf team finished 8th overall out of 20 teams.

BASEBALL

The 2014 Westminster Baseball team started the season 10-3. The team certainly did not wallow on the fact that their star player, Shane Benes, was out for the season.  Instead, they polished their already great team, and added a few fresh new faces. The team finished in 2nd place in the Midwest Classic, the highest spot they have ever earned. The team is headed into the latter half of their season with great momentum, and they are well on their way to another state run.

TENNIS

The varsity tennis team started out the season 4 and 1 with wins over Lutheran South, Sluh, Blue Springs South, and Barstow.  This year the wildcats hope to do big things as they bring back most of their talented line up from last year.  As of now, freshmen star Eddie Griesidick plays one, state champion Bailey Merkel plays 2, and state qualifier Andrew Montgomery rounds out the top 3.  So far this season, the team has had to cope with losing former number one Derek Bell.  Bell recently had wrist surgery and will have to sit out 2 to 3 more weeks.  Overall, the season looks promising for Westminster as they chase after an elusive team state title.

LACROSSE

Varsity Lacrosse started the season off with an astonishing 14-0 shutout. The team demolished their opponent Parkway Central and ended up mercy ruling in the second half. In addition to their amazing start, the girls placed first in the Kirkwood Tournament. The Lacrosse team has greatly improved since last year. The team has a bright future ahead in this season.

TRACK

The track team started out the season well with a 5th place finish out of 13 in the skippy keefer relays at John Burroughs.  In the sprinting and running category, Dylan Conway and Sanea Williams have lead the way.  So far, Bo Thomas has contributed in pole vaulting, Justin Creighton has competed in throwing competions, and Olivia Johnston has stepped up as a high jumper.

SOCCER

WCA Women’s Varsity Soccer team has started off the season with a bang.  Before spring break, the team competed in a “pre-season Jamboree” held at Nerinx Hall.  In two 35 minute scrimmages, our lady cats beat Nerinx and Clayton high schools.

After winning against these teams, our girls were excited for their first home game on March 27th against Notre Dame.  Coach Smith was not disappointed as the girls beat a team, who they have lost to the past two years.  Varsity veteran, Courtney Beat, scored the first goal of the season followed by a hat trick from freshman forward, Kirsten Davis.

The team has also beat Rosati-Kain, Lutheran North, and Clayton.  Hopes for the future of this season from soccer athletes, managers, and coaches are high.  Each member of the team cannot wait to see how the team progresses this Spring.
