Wildcats’ Comeback Earns Tie

FENTON—After a slow first half, the Westminster soccer team turned it on to score two second half goals to earn a tie against Troy.

The Wildcats had a letdown after the big win the day before. “Compared to Monday, we had a little less intensity. The energy level wasn’t as high,” said senior captain, Jake Grimes.

Grimes had a goal in the 55th minute but that was not enough for the win. “I feel like we were dominating but we couldn’t score,” said Grimes.

Conner Hunsicker knocked in a goal in the 70th minute to ensure the tie.

Although a win would have been ideal, a tie was important to get after being down by two goals. “It’s a good sign for the future. It shows that we can do the same thing in more important games later in the season,” said Grimes.

There are also short term benefits to this comeback. The Wildcats earned three points in their pool and now have a better chance to make it to the semifinals of the tournament. If they beat Mehlville, they clinch their group. “We can win this tournament but we’ll have to play a good game against Mehlville to make the semis,” said Jacob Appelbaum, junior.

The Wildcats take on Mehlville on Thursday at 4:30 at Anheuser Busch Center.
