Thirteen Sophomores Honored with Ten Pillars Awards

On May 16, Jim Marsh, headmaster, Jim Sefrit, upper school head, and many coaches and parents, honored 13 students for their exceptional character and leadership on and off the field. The students receiving the “Ten Pillar Award” varied from swimmers to runners.

The event consisted of an informal dinner and an award ceremony, which included parents, coaches, and students. Before giving the awards, coaches provided speeches explaining why they nominated specific athletes.

Perhaps the primary purpose of the “Ten Pillar Award” is centered around encouraging student athletes to keep up their good work throughout the rest of their high school career. In many cases, students are not praised for character and leadership until their senior year. This event was created so that younger students could be recognized and encouraged to continue their exeplary behavior in the next two years of high school.

In order qualify for the award students had to be recommended by their coaches. The resulting nominations were singled down to 13 by the opinions of their teachers.

Athletes who received the award included, Sarah Betz, Trent Briden, Saenea Williams, Charisse Williams, Adrienne Horn, Sam Parham, Eli Parham, Olivia Coomes, Justin Creighton, Joseph Curtis, Kaitlin Kittelson, Luke Matheny, and Megan McDaniel.
