Seniors Already Looking to Next Year

September 9, 2009

For Westminster Seniors, May 1, 2010, is a very important date. This is the date in which all high school seniors must choose which college they will be attending in the upcoming fall. While the date is still very far away, the decision marks a life changing commitment for each and every senior at Westminster. At this point, only three percent of Westminster seniors have made their official choice. The other 97 percent are still very much in the dark as to where they will be headed after high school.
In the next few months, seniors will receive thousands of letters, and make hundreds of campus visits. Free laptops from schools like Northwest Missouri State, and even a free iPhone for every student at Abilene Christian doesn’t make the decision any easier.
Hayden Lewis, senior, is one of the small handful of people and has already made her college choice. Lewis will be attending the University of Mississippi in the fall and has known this since the middle of July.
“I knew a lot of people who graduated from, and are going to Ole’ Miss and that is how I became interested in the school.” Said Lewis
“However, Ole’ Miss was not the only school I was interested in. I also visited other schools which I also liked, but when I visited Ole’ Miss, I knew it was the best place for me. After that, I applied just to get it done early, and I was accepted two weeks later,” said Lewis.
Lewis will be having fun on campus before she even graduates from high school.
“I’m going to an Ole’ Miss football game soon and I’m really excited for that,” said Lewis.
Unlike Lewis, Madison Burke, senior, has only had one college interest through out the entire college selection process. Burke will be attending Lindenwood University her freshman year. She is going there to major in television communication.
“I got really excited about Lindenwood because they told me I could immediately be a part of their campus broadcasting program, and I would be able to start in the highest drama programs as a freshman,” said Burke, who applied last spring. Lindenwood was a good fit for Burke because of its good location, and the nice campus. Burke knew Lindenwood was the school for her when they offered her the Youth of the Year scholarship, the highest scholarship Lindenwood can give.
“Receiving the Youth of the Year scholarship was very exciting because it covers almost all of my schooling and it is just a great honor to receive from the school”
About twenty Westminster seniors are currently waiting anxiously for word from the college they have applied to. Eric Johnson, senior, is one of theses students waiting to receive an acceptance letter in the mail.
Johnson applied to Mizzou four weeks ago because, “I visited the campus and liked it, so I decided to apply early so that I get a better chance at acceptance and scholarships.”
