Wildcats Run Into Rough Schedule

Last Friday, the Westminster varsity football team traveled to Washington, Missouri to take on St. Francis Borgia.  After a long week of anticipation, hopes were crushed by a disappointing 28-0 loss.  Westminster’s opponents have shut them out in three consecutive games.

smith_2_football“Offensively, it takes a lot of time and practice to gel together and have success,” said J.D. Perona, head coach and offensive coordinator.

It is extremely difficult to have an effective offense without starting quarterback, John Eric Steiner.  Steiner injured his ankle and will not be back until at least districts.

Steiner’s absence forced Jonathan Roth, junior, to start the game.  Roth went 8/17 with 78 yards.  Roth threw two interceptions.

The Wildcats did not do much on the ground either, averaging only 1.67 yards per rush.  This ineffective rushing could be due to many injuries on the offensive line.

“Our offensive line is pretty banged up, we never had the same five guys out there.  Offensive line is key to having success on offense,” said Perona.

To their credit, the Wildcats started off their season with a tough schedule.

“We made a challenging schedule on purpose in order to get ready for the last three games.  Those are the ones that really matter,” said Perona.

Even though they are experiencing tough times, the Wildcats will not give up.

“Our guys are giving it their all. They are not giving up.  This will pay off later in the season,” said Perona.

Come out and see the Wildcats try to win their first game at Trinity this Friday at 7:00pm.
