On September 19th, the girl’s varsity volleyball team competed in the Springfield Classic Volleyball Tournament.  WCA tied for third, finishing higher than any other WCA volleyball team on the past. The tournament consisted of four pools, each pool with three teams.  WCA played 3 pool matches, and ended with a 1-2 record.  The two losses were very close matches, as both teams won by only two points. The two teams that defeated WCA were both 4A powerhouses that went on to compete in the championships. “I think we did really good. We had some really tough competition. We finished third which is pretty impressive when you’re playing 4A schools,” said Kristen O’Leary, Junior. Tim Hall, Head of the Volleyball Program, described the tournament as a true “team effort” among the players. This year’s varsity squad is very young compared to years past. The varsity team includes one freshman, three sophomores, and only 4 returning starters. Stepping up this tournament was Megan Tilley, sophomore. With senior captain, Kira Stewart, injured with torn ligaments in her thumb, the team needed Tilley to step up and fill the slot. The Wildcats counted on a combination of upperclassmen leadership and underclassmen exertion to finish higher up than ever before. “This tournament was a testament to how hard they had been working, and how they look after each other as a team,” said Hall. In the tournament, the volleyball team faced fierce competition and the adversity of missing a senior starter, but through it all the Lady Wildcats still delivered a solid performance. Taking all that they have learned from the Springfield Classic, the girl’s varsity volleyball team looks forward and holds their heads high as they continue the rest of their season.
