District Champions Lose a Heartbreaker

The varsity volleyball team solidly defeated all three teams in the district tournament last week, emerging with a first place championship and a hopeful shot at state.
“We were so pumped, we kept sending each other texts and putting notes in lockers saying ‘We’re going to state!’” said Kate Krause, senior.
After quickly putting away North County Tech on Monday and Trinity on Wednesday afternoon, the Ladycats were hungry to once again meet Duchesne High School in the District Championship.
“We lost to them at home in Districts last season; we couldn’t wait for our turn to steal the championship playing on their court,” said Sarah Hall, junior team captain.
With bleachers full of fans and a fire in their eyes, the volleyball girls defeated Duchesne in two straight sets at 7:00 last Wednesday night.
“We were on fire. It was arguably one of our best games of the season. We fought so hard because we all wanted it so bad,” said Kelly Penning, senior.
In addition to their desire for a district championship, the girls were motivated to win a victory for Courtney Pfeifer, setter, who had to miss Districts due to illness.
“In our huddles Heather kept saying, ‘Do it for Courtney,’” said Erin Bognar, freshman.
With the District championship under their belts, the girls could taste the final four in the distance. Traveling to Warrenton, MO for sectionals on Saturday, October 31, the ladies met rival Villa Duchesne for the third time this season.
“They beat us in the regular season game but we beat them at the Lutheran St. Charles tournament, so we knew it’d be an awesome game,” said Kristen O’Leary, sophomore.
The back and forth battle finally culminated in a heart-breaking loss for Westminster.
“It was so upsetting because we all knew we could have gone farther. We really did have a shot at state this year,” said Sarah Hughes, senior.
In the words of Coach Hall, “they chose a bad night to have their worst game of the season. But we are no less proud of their numerous successes this weekend. This team really is something special.”
