Wildcats get second district win

The Westminster football team moved within one win of its second district title ever. The Wildcats took an early lead and never looked back in a 21-6 victory at St. Charles on Friday, Oct. 23.
After a 3-and-out on the first drive by the Pirates, the Wildcats drove all the way down the field, capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run by Ryan Allee, junior. Allee paced the Cats with 25 carries for 142 yards on the ground. The Wildcats averaged over 5 yards rushing.
Many special teams mistakes, including a 97-yard kickoff return by St. Charles, put the Cats in holes throughout the game, but the defense shut down the Pirate’s offense. The unit limited St. Charles to 43 rushing yards and only 109 yards through the air.
Before the end of the first quarter Zack Dorton, senior, padded the lead with a 1-yard touchdown on a quarterback sneak. Also, he threw a 28-yard strike to John Bergman, senior, for the Cat’s final touchdown before halftime.
It was all defense in the second half as Bergman recorded 2 interceptions and Dorton had a key hit to cause a fumble near the end zone to end the Pirate’s drive. J.D. Hartwig, senior, led the team with 7 tackles and 3 assists. Shane Moylan, junior, recorded his 3rd sack of the season to lead the team. The defense did not allow a point for the 3rd time this season.
“It wasn’t anything special, just everyone playing their responsibilities and being where they have to be,” said Cory Snyder, defensive coordinator.
The Wildcats complete their district games visiting Duchesne at 7 p.m. on Friday night. Westminster is 2-0 in districts, but not yet guaranteed a playoff spot. A win will secure first place in the district and tiebreakers will come into effect with a loss.
