Wallach Takes State in Trap Shooting

Alyssa Wallach, senior, has been involved in many sports: horse back riding, lacrosse, and her latest sport, trap shooting.
“Trap shooting is different than skeet shooting,” said Wallach.  “There are five stations for the competition, and you then have a trap house in the middle. You yell release and a bird [clay pidgeon] is fired straight at you. You then try to hit the twenty-five birds, and you and your teammates scores are added together to get the final score.”
She is involved on a ladies squad, Team Henges, and they just won state on Sept. 25 at the Missouri Youth Shooting Sports Alliance Fall Classic, MYSSA. And in addition to her team winning first place, she was an individual runner-up. However, this is not the first time that Team Henges has won state; in May they won state for MTA.
“It’s the most rewarding sport I have ever played. I practice three to four days a week. Initially I was terrible, but after extensive practices it has definitely paid off.”
Although Wallach has only been shooting for two years, she has greatly excelled and is one of the best members on her team. She decided to pursue the route of trap shooting because hunting has been a major part of her life. She has been hunting, specifically deer, since the seventh grade. She had gotten involved in this sport because her grandfather and father have a passion for it. Being surrounded by this activity opened up numerous doors for how she could excel and use her skill in different ways. When a friend to a trap shooting coaching introduced her she immediately had a drive and desire to continue this activity.
Since Wallach has a gift for trap shooting she is contemplating carrying on with this sport through college, “I am looking at getting a scholarship for trap shooting.”
However, a dilemma that she is finding is that some colleges that she is interested only offer it as a club, but she is more than happy to participate in it, and plans to continue throughout her college years.
