Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 the lady Wildcats swimming team exhibited heart and determination in a close meet against Cor Jesu. The pool erupted with spirited chants as the wildcats screamed “WCA” in response to Cor Jesu’s sassy cheers. WCA’s varsity lost a close meet, 92-84.
“I knew it was going to be very close and that it would come down to third, fourth, and fifth place points,” said Kent Kehr, WCA Swimming Coach.
Little did Coach Kehr know that a majority of the races were a fingernail away from victory. WCA lost the 200 Free by half a second which is cost the team four points overall; many of the other races were also lost by slim margins.
“Amber Terschak was second in the 200 Free and a played a substantial role in the third place 200 Free relay; she helped rake in a total of six points for the team, along with Morgan Nixon who placed third in the 500 obtaining four beneficial points toward the overall score,” said Coach Kehr.
WCA’s outstanding relay winner were Abby Clark, Haley Bergman, Rebecca Zandstra, and Katherine Fleissner in the 200 Medley and Shay Weststeyn, Rebecca Krause, Katherine Fleissner, and Rebecca Zandstra in the 400 Free Relay. Individual winners included Fleissner in the 100 Free, Zandstra in the 100 Fly and 100 Back, and Sarah Barker in Diving.
“We kept it close! Often spectators forget the reality of the point system; it is not ultimately all about winning every heat. While these wins do rain in substantial points for the team, the girls that push hard and out touch the sixth place girl are who kept this meet close,” said Ward Egan, Captain of WCA’s Men’s Swimming Team.
“It’s meets like this one that remind me that swimming is very much a team sport. Without the outstanding performances of my teammates, the meet would not have been as close as it was” said Haley Bergman, junior.
“It was a great competition and we had everyone put forth a great effort. Maybe a little short on the score, but our strong hearts will be very valuable at the upcoming league and state meets” said Coach Kehr.
The next home meet is on Friday afternoon at 4:00 against Lutheran South’s Lancers.
