Instead of noisy students and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, muffins, breads, fruit, and other breakfast foods were found in the commons. On Saturday morning, February 20th, 37 WCA dads and daughters enjoyed fellowship, food, and life lessons from an alumni and her father, Holley and Bill Maher. Holley Maher graduated from Westminster in ’97.
The Mahers spoke about their relationship as a father and daughter, through the time Holley Maher was in middle school up to now. They taught WCA families to pray together for bigger things in their family, not just the day to day things. Their message instructed people that when the tension gets too much, just stop and pray.
Bill Maher is the head partner of MRCT Benefits Plus. Growing up, they would have a lot of conversations about how life is not like what you see on TV. Authenticity and accountability to each other was one of the ideas they focused on during the talk.
The breakfast was organized by the Westminster men’s prayer group. Bruce Sheehan and John Bubenik run the prayer group. Sheehan, Bubenik, and Director of Community Relations, Kim Doyle, were the people who made the breakfast happen. The breakfast would not have been as successful with the help of these three people.
“Without them, it would have been ridiculously stupid,” said John Hartwig, who is a member of men’s prayer group and attended the breakfast with his daughter.
The breakfast is not the end of what the men’s prayer group is doing.
“The plan is to do a father/son breakfast next year,” said Hartwig.
The breakfast was enjoyed by both fathers and daughters. Westminster dad, Dan O’Neal, father of senior Nick O’Neal, donated coffee and hot chocolate for the morning.
“Everybody I talked to had positive comments about the lessons from the Mahers. It was worth the time to be there,” said Hartwig.
