Despite being a relatively young team, the WCA varsity men’s basketball team has had success beyond the expectation this season. At the start of the season, Head Coach Eric Bain described the team as moving through a “building year,” and presented the boys with a challenge to make it more than that. Although shaky at the start, with their losses out-weighing their victories, the team rallied about mid-season, with an eight-game winning streak starting in late January.
“I’ve been really impressed with Coach Bain’s work in bringing the boys together and with the team’s success this season. They’ve done really well despite being a new mix of guys, and I’m proud of them,” said Jim Dohr, father of Jack Dohr, freshman.
Each of the three freshmen on the team this year have contributed a lot, despite the usual stereotype that freshman are for “back-up” only. John Eric Steiner, freshman, has been a starter since the beginning of the season.
After senior night on Thursday, February 18, several of the senior mothers applauded the younger boys for stepping up and contributing more than expected this season.
“We weren’t sure how this year was going to work out, and you boys have really added a lot to the team…you sure are fun to watch,” said Gay Thompson, mother of Tony Thompson, senior.
The team’s overall record going into districts was a solid13-10. With a third seed, they defeated U-City on February 22 in the first round of districts and lost by a close two points in the final seconds of the game against Clayton High School on February 23.
