If one would go and look at the Wikipedia page for upcoming movies you would see a pattern. No, it’s not superhero movies. It’s not even action movies. It’s the quantity of sequels and reboots that are coming out. There are a ridiculous amount of these coming out. From reboots starring an entire new gender of heroes, to sequels to movies that came out over 10 years ago, to sequels for a rebooted franchise. Um…what?

But seriously, don’t we have any original ideas anymore? Why is it that all the movies we really care about anymore are just recycled ideas building upon each other? To give you a better idea of the amount of reboots and sequels that have come out and are coming out, here’s a small list:

Star Wars

Zoolander No. 2

Batman vs. Superman

The Jungle Book

Ghostbusters

And this isn’t even a fourth of them! Why can’t we make a whole new franchise that isn’t based on something else previously made? After the Marvel movies started cranking out movies, we saw much of a decline in the way of original series. Now, in an effort to make more money, movies have begun splitting their sequels into two parts, knowing we dumb humans will pay more money to see the rest of the series. They’ve rebooted movies over and over, in an attempt to draw in both old and young audiences or restart a failed or dying saga. And don’t even get me started on the idea to turn every animated movie into a live-action one (I’m looking at you Disney Overlords).

Don’t get me wrong, I watch these as much as the next guy, because movies are movies except when they’re made by M. Night Shyamalan. But it would be nice if for once we could go back to the days where we didn’t recycle plots, characters, and catchphrases. Back to when a movie was its own thing and didn’t rely on an old story to create a new one.
